Fire Mage in need  (Read 492 times)

Hi I have been a fire mage ever since I started playing WOW and I love it.
However I am having problems with my DPS so advice would be most welcome.
I have put my armory link so you guys can have a look and hopefully help me out:

http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Hellscream&n=Torena

I am not currently raiding in ICC yet as our guild is not wuite ready, we have done a few rep runs but thats about all. We are doing Ulduar (old hat to some but we like it) to get our members used to raiding as a group.

All advice would be helpful.
Thanks Tor

- You picked the wrong Ashen Verdict reputation ring: yours is for healers (hence the MP/5), exchange it with [Ashen Band of Greater Destruction]
- The caster ring gives you +50 hit rating, so you can change some of the sockets to SP/crit or SP/haste
- You missed a lot of socket boni that give a significant amount of spellpower: Head (+9) and Chest (+9)
- Yellow gems are usually worse than orange ones (wrist, cloak)
- Your chest is missing an enchant (greater stats)

You gemmed SP/Spirit in your chest, when you shouldn't have.  Your helm should have your purple (SP/Spirit) gem, not your shoulders.  As for talents, you should probably go for Fire/Frostfire instead of what you have now.  The main things about the specs are 2/3 Ice Shards with a Frostfire spec is not good, and lack of Glyph of Fireball in a Fireball spec isn't too great either.  My question here is, what do you want to do with these specs?

-replace all of your +23sp gems and SP haste gems with +12sp +10crit
- i use a TTW spec over FFB http://www.wowarmory.com/character-talents.xml?r=Kil'jaeden&cn=Siop&group=1 is my spec.
-just remember hit(till caped) > crit > SP > haste
-black magic isnt that good for fire mages. its awsome for arcane. id switch to the SP staff enchant. only get black magic if you are useing a sword/offhand combo

dont worry about makeing your socket bounuses its a bounous if you do and plan for it (for ex i have both my blue gems in my staff for the SP boost since i need them anyways.) but 10 spiret only gives you 3 crit or you could take a 10 crit gem. idealy you want your crit around 35-40% unbuffed mine is at 36% unbuffed and when im fully 10man raid buffed its 52%, 55 when FM procs off the afliction lock so basicly always. and 58% in 25mans.

Hi all thankyou for all the tips I will be making come adjustments. However there are some things that have been said that I am confused about. I have been reading a lot of sites for advice on my mage talents and have made several changes Elitist Jerks is the latest one.
My talent tree was the one that was suggested from several sites as being the best so again that is what I went for, I do know that I can make a few subtle changes so will be sorting that. Most sites say that a fire mage should do Hit (till capped)>Haste>SP>Crit so that is what I went for. There has been a lot of discussions about haste and a few other fire mages rate it as a highly desired stat as the faster you cast the more damage you do...is this not an advantage then?
I will change my ring and the enchant back on my staff (it was advice from another mage that suggested Black Magic) though I hadn't realised he was Arcane rather than fire.
I know the enchant is missing on my chest it was supposed to be done but for some reason did not take and it took a while for me to realise it, that is now being sorted.
I am unsure why I need to change all sp and sp haste gems to sp and crit if I reduce sp sureley I reduce damage.
My glyphs again were what was suggested in all of the sites that I got tips from so again that is what I went with.
Finally as to what I want to do with my specs is be the best mage I can with what I have (gear wise etc) so I can help my guild when we get to the higher raids.

Well, this is why you're here, isn't it?  To educate yourself, so you can be one of those big-shots who can suggest good advice to others.  Don't trust everything you read online.  Get 3/3 Ice Shards for your Frostfire spec (get it out of imp blizzard), that loss of crit damage on Frostfire (basically the reason why the spec & spell are viable) is bad.  I'd suggest grabbing Rawr and testing things out yourself.  In theory, crit is probably better for fire, considering Ignite & Hot Streak, along with Master of the Elements.  Crit has always been something that scales well for Marksman hunters (they currently crit for something stupid like 360%, modified by what armour isn't pierced by ArP), as well as a couple of other classes (alright for warriors for example).  Haste has always been a pretty decent stat, and for Arcane which doesn't really lawlcrit, and Frost which can't crit for big numbers, it's a decent stat.

Don't ever gem for crit.  Ever.

I mean, it's better than sp/haste for fire, but crit rating is so awful.  so awful.

Ok let me make one thing very clear I do not want to be a "Big Shot" as suggested and I only give advice to others if asked and if I know what I am talking about. I generally will direct to some one who is a better authority than I am or suggest sites to look at.
My aim has always been to play my part for my guild not for me personally to outdo any one else. All my concerns are for the fact that my DPS starts really good at the beginning of a raid but seems to drop off a bit towards the end.
I am FFB spec and the reason both my specs are fire is because I was experimenting with the dummies to try and gage which spec would be best. The one I currently have active is the one I favour.
I dont trust all I read but have tried to take on board the best of each, even here the advice is conflicting..one says dont go crit one does..one says get rid of ice shards one says put in more.
I have made the few changes I said I would and will check out the ice shard talent but already I have seen a bit of improvement just making those changes.
Thanks for the suggestion about the ring and I have even managed to get a few missed bonuses.
My enchants are also now sorted so thanks again for that.

spell power and sp/crit gems are the best if your aim is to do more damage, for the record.  I just hate crit rating Cheesy

I am so going to make a sarcasm font thread today.  I'm tired of the internets being lazy.
